Rays girls surge past Rebels
An even four-quarter performance saw Dandenong get back on the winner’s list with a fifty-three point victory over the GWV Rebels at Shepley Oval.
Round thirteen saw the girls return home to take on the GWV Rebels on a relatively sunny day in Dandenong.
It was a strong starting twenty-three with most of the Vic Country girls coming back from representative duties.
Starting in the opening bounce, Alice Cunnington took no time to get involved. Weaving her way through defenders in the forward fifty before finishing on the run to kick the first goal of the game.
Molly Reimers then marked near goals shortly after and converted to put through our second in the fifth minute.
Left-footer Matilda Argus continued her good form. Covering ground, racking up the touches and putting on the pressure. She led the game with 23 disposals to go along with five tackles.
We found our third through Nalu Brothwell who snapped truly in the fourteenth-minute.
The Rebels got on the board shortly after to trim the margin to fifteen points at the first break.
In the second, it was Kiara Triep who got going. Putting home a major from the goal square before nailing a set shot just minutes later to make it two goals from two kicks.
Greater Western Victoria though hit back immediately with one of their own.
But, the Stingrays continued to dominate both possession and territory, however struggled to put the ball through the big sticks, kicking six behinds in the term.
As a result of the ball control we found another goal, this time through Evelyn Connolly, her first of the day.
The team defence stood tall in the opening half with the likes of Gabrielle Mehrmann, Jayde Pudney, Zoe Zach, Charlotte Hewitson, and Scarlett Marsh all putting in great efforts.
Dandenong led by thirty-three points at the main break.
The Rebels came out hot in the second half, booting two goals in quick succession to narrow the margin.
But the girls held firm.
And would hit back, with Connolly kicking truly from a set shot in the eleventh minute, and Georgia Goss finishing on the run from a slight angle to steady the ship.
With an impressive celebration following the kick.
It was an even term with the half time lead being trimmed down just one point to thirty-two after three quarters.
Reimers kicked her second early on in the fourth before GWV found their fifth.
Cunnington (21 disposals, six marks) capped off a great game with her second, and our tenth, a left-foot snap on the run.
Jasmine Whitten then hit the scoreboard with a major of her own in the fifteenth minute before Connolly kicked her third and final goal of the match.
Playing more through the midfield in the last, Nikita Harris (19 disposals, nine tackles) was influential. Finding the ball in all areas and sticking tackles.
Another who brought the pressure was Frankie Shepard, laying ten tackles.
Eventually, the siren sounded with the girls recording a strong 12.13 (85) to 5.2 (32) win.
They’ll next take on the Sandringham Dragons this Saturday at Seaford in the first match of a double header with the boys who will play later on in the day.
